Pretty Little Liars Spoilers: Keegan Allen Talks Toby’s “Heartbreaking” Past — Exclusive

Sure, “A” may be the enigmatic central figure of Pretty Little Liars, but there’s another character on the ABC Family series that we know little about: Toby Cavanaugh (Keegan Allen). But it looks like that’s all about to change in Season 4.

Wetpaint Entertainment chatted with Keegan about Season 4, Toby’s mysterious past which is somehow connected to Alison! and a certain “heartbreaking” scene that will start to piece together the parts of Toby’s past.

Wetpaint Entertainment: What can you say about the Season 4 premiere?

Keegan Allen: I can say that right off the bat, we find out the contents of the trunk. And it's shocking. It's very, very shocking. People that have watched the show from Season 1, all the way through Season 2 and Season 3 are going to get a nice amount of answers to everything that they wanted to know pretty much since season one. Everything's answered within the first 30 minutes of the episode, in an amazing way.

You're kidding!

No, I'm not kidding! A lot of people will be like, "Oh my God, finally." And right then, they get hit with a huge punch of like, "Wait, then there's all these other questions that have to be answered now." But it pretty much answers everything that people have been wanting to know about the show.

So everything about the “A” team and Alison is answered? All of that, really?

You'll see. I don't want to say exactly what. There are a lot of answers. And the viewers know what to focus on, which is Red Coat. And then there are a whole bunch of other storylines that are coming out, which are really great. They're so good, and the show has taken a much darker turn than the first three seasons.

So I hear we're going to find out about Toby's past. What can you hint about that?

He is a character that dies in the books early on, and Marlene King saw this character as something so much more. Throughout these last three seasons, she's created him to be everything from the black cat of Rosewood and the shady character who won't say anything, to the moral compass of the show and the perfect boyfriend. And then for him to plot with Mona and be part of the “A” team, and now, we go into where I've always been asking Marlene since the very beginning. "Tell me more about his past." And she's like, "You're going to find out. I promise you, you're going to find out." And boy oh, boy, do we find out!

He has such a dark past, but it's amazing. And it's great to unveil this past throughout all these episodes and see how it connects with everything else in a pretty grand scale. And through that, you see the tightening of the relationship between Spencer and Toby. You see Toby’s soft spot, and “A” really goes for it and hits him when he's the weakest. And maybe he does a couple of things that he's not too proud of, but it's an amazing look into a character that we know so little about.

And we're going to have a flashback with your mother.

Yes! And man oh, man, is that storyline heartbreaking. It really is. It's pretty intense.

Does it sort of fill in the blanks of certain performances you’ve done in the past?

Oh, yes. The writers do an amazing job of this. The fans can go back and kind of map their ways around certain storylines and piece things together that now would make sense. It's really interesting to see that. You will go back and be like, "Oh my God, this makes so much sense now.”

What about Toby and Alison? What can we expect from that dynamic?

I don't want to say too much about it – but at one time there was a friendship there. And we're going to see what happened and why Toby is the way he is with her, and it has a connection to his mother. But typical Alison kind of burns the bridge. It's so good. It's really well-written, and I just can't wait for people to see it. And I can't wait to hear what people think about it too. It's a very dark storyline. But our audience is growing up with us. Man, it's good stuff, for sure.

Are you as excited as we are to get to know Toby this season? Sound off in the comments!
