Watching this interview that Joseph Morgan (Klaus Mikaelson) just did with TV Guide cements one already long-held belief: JoMo could not be more dislike the scheming, manipulative, backstabbing character he plays on The Originals. Don’t get us wrong; we love Klaus. But Joseph’s sincerity and sweetness is rarely on display when he slips into character. Could that change now that Klaus is set to spend more time with Baby Hope?

“Since they found out that his daughter’s alive and they had kind of created this ruse that Hope had died, he is all about protecting her and to do that he is going to build this sort of fortress of allies around her,” Joseph teased about Klaus’ upcoming character arc. “He’s extending olive branches. He’s trying to promote the betrothal of Hayley and Jackson, and so he has a werewolf army at his fingertips. He’s really all about protecting his baby.”

So, Klaus’ master plan is to make lots of friends... Er, maybe he should get a friend-making consultant? However his strategy to build up a system of alliances works out, we can’t help but gush over the fact that Klaus is so sweet when it comes to Baby Hope. We just hope his character holds onto the lightness that being a father seems to bring out in him, and doesn’t succomb to the desperate fear that often goes along with it. Because fear makes Klaus do dark, murderous things — and we still have hope for Klaus’ redemption arc. Yes, we’re fools.

Do you think Klaus’ plan to build up a network of allies will work? How do you think being a father will change Klaus in the long run? Share your theories in the comments below!

The Originals airs Monday nights at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
