Bachelorette 2014: Who Is Contestant Eric Hill? (UPDATE)

UPDATE 6/2/14: We had already steeled ourselves for an uncomfortable exit for Eric Hill, since we all know that the handsome, adventurous, fascinating explorer passed away after filming his show, but nothing prepared us for Season 10 Episode 4. On the June 2 episode, Eric followed up a previous conversation he had with Andi in a pretty honest way. The last time they sat down, he asked her if it was strange going back to a group setting after the two had kicked off the season with such up close and personal hang time. She said nope, which must've been a little awkward.

So, on Episode 4, he brought it up again, saying he thought their relationship had stalled and he wanted to keep moving forward. She agreed and he told her all about how he left the Mormon church in his mid-20s and how he was afraid his family would disown him. Pretty good getting to know you stuff, if you ask us. But later, at the Rose Ceremony cocktail party, Eric again pulled Andi aside. This time, he told her that he had a realization that it wasn't him that was stalling things, it was her and her poker face.

Eric reasoned that Andi was trying to show nothing on her face, even though he had seen glimpses of her true self come through on their 1-on-1 date, and that it was frustrating to be met with a "TV actress" instead of the person he had come to meet. She did not like what he had to say, and let him go. Eric hopped in a cab and left the building.

ORIGINAL STORY: Of all of Bachelorette Andi Dorfman's suitors, Bachelorette contestant Eric Hill is likely the one you've heard of — due to a tragic event that occurred during the filming of Season 10.

(Spoilers about Andi's season ahead, so stop reading now if you'd like.)

Eric passed away on April 23, 2014, after he was critically injured in paragliding accident three days prior in Draper, UT. He was 31.

The incident was not a part of the Bachelorette production, as the show had been filming Andi's hometown dates, which did not involve Eric.

Reality Steve had previously dug up some details about Eric's adventurous life.

Eric grew up in Citrus Heights, California, in Sacramento County, but later lived in Salt Lake City, Utah while attending Brigham Young University. According to Steve, Eric ran in the same wide-cast circle as previous seasons’ favorites Jef Holm or Brooks Forester, and they encouraged their pal to take a break from his adventures to hunt some roses.

Why? He was hard at work on a mission of his own — set to visit all 195 United Nations-recognized countries in world record time. Alongside a camera crew, he was filming his time in every country and hoping to check them all off his list in three years and three months. As of his website's publishing, he had stopped through 25, starting with North Korea in 2013.

He also had a documentary in progress associated with his travel, The Global Odyssey (aka GO with Eric) — the goal for which was to "film and document the exciting journey to show that awesome exists in every country, especially with the people," according to his site,

Eric grew up with five brothers and sisters, and showed a love for adventure early in life. After graduating from high school in 2000, he moved to SLC, where he studied Human Biology at BYU, graduating in 2005 with a B.S. and a minor in Business Management. According to his website, he was heading for dental school and had even scored insanely high (98.7th percentile) on the DAT, the dental school test, before opting out. As he mentioned on his first appearance on the Season 10 Premiere, he found himself asking if that was all he wanted to do with his life, or if there was something more.

As Eric tells Andi on Season 10 Episode 2, his siblings all have a bunch of kids, with most having three little ones. We pretty much started sobbing while he talked excitedly about how much he wanted to have kids, and how he planned on cutting down on the risk-taking activities as soon as he had a family.

He hadn't been on social media since leaving for Los Angeles to start filming the show, but you can read more about him on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn and read about his adventures on
