Vampire Diaries Spoilers: Steroline Is in the “Friend Zone” — Will That Change?

There are so many ‘ships on The Vampire Diaries! We had a great time with Stelena, are semi-enjoying the roller coaster ride that Delena is delivering, and relishing the blooming romance for Steroline. Can Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Caroline (Candice Accola) really be together in the end?

"I don't want to speculate about where they end up, but I do think what has happened is a very strong friendship has developed between them, that's been really special, and will continue to grow even more special," executive producer Julie Plec told E! Online. "As for what each of them feels for the other, who knows? Right now, we're in the friend zone."

Even executive producer Caroline Dries admitted that the writers talk about the potential couple “all the time.” But she also addressed the apprehension the writers have about just throwing Stefan and Caroline together, saying, “I think we never do anything on the show, I hope, that's just throwing two people together and being like, ‘OK, have sex!' That's not how we like to tell stories…so if we do it, I will say this, it will feel earned and organic. We will slowly play it, it's not just going to be this random thing that we waste and ruin it. We're very careful about that."

It’s good to hear that the writers aren’t just willing to throw Stefan and Caroline together. It sounds like their relationship has been purposefully growing since they became besties and culminated with their recent cuddling in Traveler territory.

Given the fact that Stefan and Elena (Nina Dobrev) are being thrown together in Season 5, Episode 18 (“Resident Evil”), things could get mighty awkward pretty quickly if Steroline becomes a thing. We want it so bad, but it could get pretty messy.

The Vampire Diaries airs Thursday nights at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
