Pretty Little Liars Spoilers: Was Ezra Obsessed With Ali?

One of the most unsettling revelations of Pretty Little Liars Season 4 has been the confirmation that Ezra (Ian Harding) was in a relationship with Alison (Sasha Pieterse) before she disappeared. And, furthermore, that he has been working on a true crime novel about her disappearance on and off ever since. Executive producer Oliver Goldstick talked to E! Online about Ezra’s seeming obsession with Ali...

“I think he was obsessed because the girl is an enchantress,” Oliver said. “This girl, Alison, has been mythic to us for 95 episodes and what's interesting in this next season is she's going to become very flesh and blood. Before, she had a very big mythology to her because she's always been seen through everyone else's eyes. And I think in Ezra's eyes as well, she's gained mythic proportions because of her disappearance. I think he knew already that she was a crafty girl, who was capable of incredible lies and was incredibly precocious. He wondered if it was possible that she could've pulled this off? Was she really gone? I think he always questioned it.”

Oliver seems to be proposing that Ezra is obsessed with the idea of Alison and so is the show and its viewers. In the first three seasons of PLL, Alison had power as an archetype as much as a character: the queen bee, the temptress, the Lolita. She had found “immortality, my darlings” in the mystery of her death. She was forever that beautiful girl on the missing posters and in the haloed flashbacks of her pre-disappearance life. And the idea that she possibly managed to evade death only added to that mythic, superhuman quality. She was smarter than “A” and smarter than death. Nothing could touch her. Or so it seemed...

With every Season 4 glimpse we get of Ali, that illusion is slowly being shattered both for the PLL characters and we viewers. Ironically, this may be the ultimate punishment for Alison and everything she’s done. Because Ali worked so hard to maintain a certain image, and now she’s slowly being unraveled into something less than myth, into something real. And it’s kind of mesmerizing to watch happen especially because, if Ali makes the right choices, she may realize that her true self was all her friends ever really wanted from her.
