Game of Thrones Spoilers: What Happens to Dany Next?

Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) has had a bit of a slow season on Game of Thrones. It could be just because she’s finally no longer trekking across a continent, but it just seems like not too much is going on. Sure, she became a queen, began a romance with Daario (offscreen, what gives, HBO?), and kicked Ser Jorah out of her posse, but nothing really felt too dramatic, probably just because of the insanity going on in Westeros. So, will Dany’s story pick up soon?

Warning! This article contains spoilers from the A Song of Ice and Fire book series, click away now if you don’t want to know!

In the books, Dany has a few big moments coming up. First, a group of rebels called the Sons of the Harpy start causing trouble in the streets of Meereen, killing those loyal to Dany while she seems powerless to stop them. Then, Dany’s dragons kill a child, bringing her the realization that her children are now out of her control, so she has them seized and locked away. However, Drogon resists capture and flees the city.

Adding to Dany’s stress level, Yunkai is threatening war against Meereen, for Dany’s thwarting of the slave trade in the area. Meereen is also still suffering problems with the Sons of the Harpy, so Dany agrees to marry Hizdahr zo Loraq, whom we have already met in the show, if he can somehow bring peace to the streets. He does, leading Daario to believe that he was in charge of the violence to begin with, but Dany goes ahead and marries him anyway. Around this time, Quentyn Martell of Dorne, Oberyn’s nephew, arrives in Meereen wishing to marry Dany, only to discover she’s already wed.

Dany’s new husband Hizdahr convinces her to reopen the fighting pits, which she does reluctantly, and at the ensuing fights Hizdahr attempts to poison Dany (Dany is unaware of this, but it’s later discovered by Barristan Selmy). Interrupting the fighting is Drogon, who lands in the pit and wreaks havoc, until Dany climbs on his back and flies away.

So Dany definitely has a lot to do in Season 5, though sadly it’s still all very separated from the goings on in Westeros. Hopefully one of these days she’ll make it there, but until then, at least she rides a dragon!
