"We've been doing a nice slow, slow, slow burn of this Traveler storyline…what we will come to understand what exactly it is these people want, what it has to do with this alleged doppelganger prophecy and what they need from our doppelgangers," Julie teased. "At the end of that, there will be a face to that group that we will meet later in the season who we haven't cast yet."
We knew the Travelers were up to something! And we’ll eat our keyboards if the villain Julie’s referring to isn’t the mysterious Markos about whom we’ve been hearing mentions. He has been described as a “charismatic but imposing leader from a faraway land” who is “super dark, but people can’t help but be drawn to him.” Oh yeah, “and he’s worshipped by his followers.”
Basically, he sounds like bad news for the vamps of Mystic Falls, whose list of followers begins and ends at their high school social circle. (They haven’t even made any college friends yet!)
It sounds like Markos won’t be around for a while yet — until Season 5, Episode 17 to be exact — which means we have time to speculate about why the Travelers need all of that doppelganger blood and what significance the doppelgangers have to the Travelers in general. Could there be a more nefarious side to this doppelganger soulmate concept that’s been bandied around? Maybe Katherine should have taken Nadia’s advice and high-tailed it out of Mystic Falls while she had the chance.
