ABC Explains Stana Katic’s ‘Castle’ Drama As Nathan Fillion Joins Sitcom

Castle fans went through a lot this year.

The crime dramedy’s female lead Stana Katic was unceremoniously fired in April and then the entire show was cancelled just before its finale — rendering Stana’s public diss moot.

ABC’s president is finally explaining all the behind-the-scenes drama with Kate Beckett’s portrayer.

"That's a case where you have things running on two parallel tracks," Channing Dungey explained at the Television Critics Association summer press tour.

Although Castle aired for eight seasons on ABC, it was produced by both ABC Studios and outside company Beacon Pictures.

"We were always very upfront with the studio and the producers about the possibility that we might not be bringing the show back for a season 9,” the exec explained.

“But the studio has to do what they need to do in order to prepare for the possibility of a season 9."

Part of that preparation is figuring out which actors are staying and which will depart.

"So they did what they felt they needed to do in order to be ready should they get the nod," Channing continued.

"And ultimately for us at the network, we did not feel that it was the right thing to do to order another season."

ABC’s explanation comes as Castle’s other big star, Nathan Fillion, joins another series on the net.

The 45-year-old is heading to Modern Family Season 8 to play “a local weatherman who gets involved with the Dunphys,” executive producer Steven Levitan revealed at the TCAs.

The handsome former soap star will appear on multiple episodes of the comedy. Now if only we knew which show Stana was going to pop up on next!
