Stephen Fry Admits to Suicide Attempt With “Huge Number of Pills”

Bones star Stephen Fry, who plays Booth’s psychiatrist, Dr. Gordon Wyatt, on the show, has admitted he tried to commit suicide in 2013 by taking a “huge number of pills” and drinking them down with vodka. Fry said a producer found him in an “unconscious state” after the attempt and that it was a very “close run thing.”

The British writer and actor, suffers from bipolar disorder and said he wanted to be open about his experience as the president of Mind, a mental health charity.

In a podcast interview with comedian Richard Herring posted on the BBC website, Stephen Fry said his body’s response to the pills and alcohol caused convulsions so intense that he broke four ribs. Fry previously admitted in the BBC documentary The Secret Life of the Manic Depressive to another suicide attempt in 1995 after he suddenly quit a play he was starring in.

The Bones star admitted in the podcast interview, recorded in front of a live audience at a London theatre, that he is “not always happy” in his life. "I am the victim of my own moods, more than most people are perhaps,” Fry said, “in as much as I have a condition which requires me to take medication so that I don't get either too hyper or too depressed to the point of suicide."

Before turning to acting, Stephen Fry experienced a very troubled childhood. He was expelled from several schools and was jailed for three months on charges of credit card fraud. Eventually he was accepted to Queens’ College in Cambridge and ended up performing in a comedy duo act with future House star Hugh Laurie.

Stephen said there is no rhyme or “reason” behind someone trying to kill themselves and asking “why” it happens is “not the right question.” He said that if there was a good reason behind the madness of a suicide attempt, you could reason with someone and tell them why they shouldn’t — but there isn’t.
