Vanderpump Rules Star Katie Maloney Talks New Season and New Career Goals — Exclusive

Viewers came to know and love Katie Maloney on Season 1 of Bravo’s Vanderpump Rules, as we navigated the super dramatic world of working at Lisa Vanderpump’s West Hollywood restaurant, SUR.

Katie, who is best friends with Stassi Schroeder and Kristen Doute, had a wild first season on the reality series, but tells Wetpaint Entertainment exclusively that Season 2 is “going to blow last season out of the water.”

Check out our interview with the Utah girl below, where she dishes about how she’s changed since Season 1, how she’s getting along with her co-stars, and how she’s preparing for a future beyond SUR. Hit the comments afterwards and let us know if you’ll be watching the Season 2 premiere tonight!

Wetpaint Entertainment: Is there anything you can tell us about the storyline this season? What were some of the highs and lows for you?

Katie Maloney: It’s similar to the dynamic that played out last year with two of my best friends, Stassi and Kristen. I’m always trying to be the supportive, good friend who always has their best interest in mind and at heart.

So you’re going to see that same version of me there, but you’re also going to see a side of me that you probably would not expect.

In what ways have you changed as a person from Season 1 to Season 2? You made it pretty clear that you wanted to be more vocal and stand up for yourself this time around.

I think I’m mostly the same, but if I’m thinking something or if I’m feeling something, I’m going to say it. I had the tendency before to kind of keep quiet and shy away from confrontation — I didn’t want to get too combative too quickly and would pick and choose my battles. But now I understand that if I don’t speak my mind, if I don’t share my opinion, it appears that I don’t have a backbone. So I feel like I’ve changed in a sense that I’ve learned how important it is to be forthright with people and to speak your mind and to offer it — even if it’s not asked for.

After an emotional first season, can you tell us how much of a healing period was there between Season 1 wrapping and Season 2 filming?

There absolutely was a healing period. After the dust settled from everything that had happened, we got the opportunity to take our time and really communicate things. Of course, during that time, the show was airing, so everything that we said and didn’t know each other said, we were sort of able to talk it out and resolve our differences, especially with Stassi, because she and I had a sort of falling out. We really had an opportunity to patch that up and our friendship became better than it ever was.

This season it looks like Scheana Marie is trying to work her way into your tight group of friends [Stassi, Katie, and Kristen], what can you tell us about that dynamic?

Yeah, Scheana was sort of new to our group of friends last season and we sort of created a bond and a friendship with her. I think that the dynamic in the workplace, no matter what, there’s going to be drama with people. But Scheana is a really great girl. She’s really sweet and I do like her.

How long do you think you’ll be working at SUR? Are you working on some other big life plans?

At this point, I’m trying to pursue a career in hair and makeup — not necessarily cutting hair, but styling. I’ve been working with photographers and photoshoots and building a little portfolio for myself. I really want to pursue that career and I have some big plans hopefully for a business idea one day. SUR is a really great place where I can keep trying at that while maintaining some steady income as well. So I’ll stay at SUR as long as I need to until I can fully be focused on my other work.

You were pretty brutal with Jax during the reunion, how has he changed from Season 1 to Season 2, in your eyes?

Oh boy. Jax has been a friend of Tom’s and I honestly see him like a brother. There’s a lot of things he does and says that I disapprove of and I’m not shy about telling him when he’s being an idiot and I continue to do so.

He’s been really working on himself and figuring out what he really wants and figuring out how he can continue to be a better person, not for himself, but for his friends and important people in his life. I’ll continue giving him tough love, but I have the utmost faith in him.

Did you get a chance to meet the new housewives, Joyce Giraud and Carlton Gebbia?

I met Joyce, but I don’t think I’ve met Carlton. Joyce is beautiful and she was really, really sweet.

Season 2 of Vanderpump Rules premieres tonight, November 4, at 9 p.m. ET on Bravo after the Season 4 premiere of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.
