On April 1, Team Usher singers Stevie Jo and Morgan Wallen belted out a duet to “Story of My Life” by One Direction. Usher paired best friends Morgan and Stevie Jo in hopes that an even playing field would allow the loser of the battle to be stolen. While both vocalists were jarred by the choice, they were determined to make their second battle count.

After looking at their song selections, both singers chose “Story of My Life” which they felt could showcase their soft and hard tones respectively. During rehearsals, mentor Chris Martin gave each artist tips to help with their breath control. Usher still noticed that Stevie Jo would at times disappear during his performance, while Morgan stood out, but still became a little shaky.

Taking the stage with the British pop ballad, the friends battled to the death. Coach Shakira really enjoyed the performance, with Morgan’s raspy voice and Stevie’s runs and trills. Adam Levine called the performance “awesome,” stating that he was pleasantly surprised by Morgan’s performance. Blake Shelton was impressed by how far Morgan had grown and loved Stevie Jo’s technique.

Usher started his critique by noting Morgan’s surprising falsetto, which the crooner said proved that Morgan was a student capable of learning. He then complimented Stevie Jo for his amazing technique and ultimately decided to keep him for his team. But it wouldn’t be the end of the road for Morgan. At the last moment, Adam used his only steal to scoop Morgan for his team.
