Sum 41’s Deryck Whibley Hospitalized Due to Alcoholism, Doctors Say One More Drink Will Kill Him (VIDEO)
Scary news has emerged for rock fans, as Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley has confirmed that he has been hospitalized for weeks due to complications from his alcoholism.
On May 16, the rocker — whose divorce from Avril Lavigne was finalized in 2010 — posted a photo (at left) of himself in a hospital bed. On his blog, he explains that he passed out recently after his liver and kidneys collapsed, and so his fiancée rushed him to the hospital.
"Sorry I’ve been so m.i.a. lately, but i’ve been very sick in the hospital for a month and was pretty sick for a few weeks leading up to my trip to the hospital," he writes on his blog. "The reason I got so sick is from all the hard boozing i’ve been doing over the years. It finally caught up to me. I was drinking hard every day."
Deryck — whose pop-punk band's debut 2001 album went platinum on the strength of hits like "Fat Lip" — says that the health scare has made him realize he needs to get sober immediately. "I finally realized I can’t drink anymore," he writes. "If I have one drink, the docs say I will die. I'm not preaching or anything but just always drink responsibly. I didn’t, and look where that got me."
We admire Deryck for being so open about his struggles, and we wish him all the best as he recuperates and gets on a healthier path.
