Supernatural Spinoff: Season 9 Will Introduce Character to Lead New Show
Exciting news, SPN fans! Supernatural Season 9 premieres Tuesday, October 8 on The CW — and it looks like a spinoff is in the works as well.
The Vampire Diaries successfully launched its own spinoff, The Originals, and now it's Supernatural's turn. At Comic-Con, executive producer Bob Singer said a backdoor pilot is being developed that will launch the new show. According to Zap2it, early details are that a new character will be introduced late in the season, on or around Episode 20, and that episode will serve as a pilot for the new show, with the new character anchoring the spinoff. The new show will reportedly have a more urban feel than Supernatural.
TVLine reports that the potential spinoff will achieve this gritty feel by changing the show's locale to Chicago, where monsters and hunters will fight on the metropolis' mean streets.
Asked about a Supernatural offshoot back in January, The CW president Mark Pedowitz said, "You look at [whether the] audience is engaged. You look at that universe — can it actually launch something. Supernatural, if you decide to do a spin-off off of that, you [question] does it work? Does it incubate the show really well?" Guess they decided this universe could indeed launch something.
What do you think? What new character will anchor the show? Will you watch? Are you excited, or do you need some of the core SPN characters to be involved to really have your interest?
