15 Supporting ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Characters Who Should Have Been Regulars

Grey’s Anatomy boasts one of the largest casts on network television, but even Shondaland has its limits.

Not every recurring doctor character gets to stay on full-time, unfortunately… though some are surely milling around Grey Sloan Memorial still!

In the gallery above, we’ve listed 15 supporting Grey’s Anatomy characters — medical professionals or otherwise — whom we wish were fixtures on the ABC drama.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 14 premieres on Thursday, September 28, at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.

1. Catherine Avery

Jackson’s mom is such an imposing presence at the hospital, you’d think the Debbie Allen character would be a regular by now… or at least a full-fledged employee!

But Catherine still works at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, believe it or not. Let’s drop the pretenses and just bring her to Grey Sloan full-time.

2. Henry Burton

Henry’s death still ranks as one of the saddest moments on Grey’s Anatomy — especially because Cristina was operating on him without knowing who he really was and wife Teddy was operating on another patient in the O.R. next door.

Granted, the charming Scott Foley character had no medical training, but he did work at the hospital as an administrative assistant briefly, so he coulda continued doing that if he had lived.

3. Nicole Herman

Grey Sloan’s erstwhile Head of Fetal Surgery made no apologies and took no excuses. We loved her almost instantly, partly because she was played by Oscar winner Geena Davis.

Amelia miraculously removed Nicole’s brain tumor, but the operation left her blind. That’s OK — those who can’t, teach, right?

When April left this paramedic at the altar (and eloped with Jackson), he disappeared. We would have loved to see this character get full-time status after that, if only to make April and Jackson’s life at Grey Sloan a living hell.

Plus, how could we give up Justin Bruening’s good looks?

5. Ellis Grey

True, Ellis wouldn’t be a series regular for long, given her Alzheimer’s diagnosis. But the Kate Burton character’s tenuous relationship with Meredith was captivating to watch, especially when she was lucid.

(Also, we would have loved to see more of Ellis’s legendary surgical skills.)

6. Rebecca Pope

Sure, she was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and shipped off to a psychiatric facility, but before her breakdown, Rebecca a.k.a. Ava a.k.a. Jane Doe had serious chemistry with Alex after he saved her from the ferry crash and gave her an identity when she couldn’t remember hers.

Plus, it’s scientifically impossible not to like Elizabeth Reaser.

7. Charles Percy

R.I.P. Dr. Percy.

This Robert Baker character died in the hospital shooting, but before that, the unlucky-in-love surgical resident was one of our favorite transfers from Mercy West (even if he did bungle his chances with Izzie).

Let’s face it — Grey’s Anatomy wouldn’t be a drama if the doctors actually sought counseling to work through their issues.

Still, this Amy Madigan character, an attending psychiatrist at the hospital, forced characters like Meredith and Owen to deal with emotional wounds that never healed, and her conversations with them were fascinating.

Mitch Pileggi’s character on Grey’s Anatomy, the chairman of the hospital's board of directors, was just as much a bureaucrat as his character Skinner was on The X-Files.

But that makes for some tense drama between him and whoever is the Chief of Surgery at the time.

We totally ship Bailey and Ben, but — we’ll be honest — we’d bring this nurse ex of hers back in a second if it meant we could ogle Daniel Sunjata again.

If Izzie can’t come back to cause Jolex drama, maybe Lucy could.

Alex got on with this OB/GYN attending, played by Rachael Taylor, quite well… until, of course, he decided to go to Africa without considering her.

Maybe Stephanie would have stayed at Grey Sloan if this patient-boyfriend of hers had a) lived and b) gotten a job at the hospital.

Hey, it’s a stretch, but Wilmer Valderrama’s charms will not be ignored.

And speaking of handsome guest stars, let’s not forget this Kyle Chandler character, the bomb guy who blew up in a cloud of “pink mist.”

Would he have switched careers and gotten a job at the hospital? Stranger things have happened…

14. Norman Shales

Bucking Grey’s Anatomy’s trend of young, comely surgical interns came Norman, a man who decided to jump tracks after 30 years of working as a pharmacist.

His experience and wisdom could have proven a real asset to the program, but he switched to psych after suffering a stroke on the job.

(And now actor Edward Herrmann, whom you know from Gilmore Girls, has passed away.)

15. Virginia Dixon

As far as we know, this Mary McDonnell character has been the only Grey’s Anatomy surgeon on the autism spectrum. She told her colleagues she has Asperger’s syndrome, which is why she comes off as blunt and she doesn’t get sarcasm.

But Virginia was also a brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon, and Cristina was in serious need of a mentor at the time.
