Emily Maynard sure pulled the wool over our eyes — and not just because she got married on a farm! The Bachelorette shed her single status on June 7 after saying “I do” to Tyler Johnson, the automotive management consultant who won her heart without cameras rolling.
If you’ve been tracking Emily’s love life as avidly as we have (no shame), you know this was girlfriend’s fourth engagement but her first marriage. And as if her getting married wasn’t already a big enough surprise, Em decided to keep the whole thing secret!
The 28-year-old Southern belle walked down the aisle in a low-key outdoor ceremony with all the twinkling lights and down-home cuisine a girl could ask for. “I never pictured myself as the country club bride,” she tells People, explaining how she’s “not super fussy.”
The one detail Emily knew she wanted was the location: her hubby’s family farm in Sharon, South Carolina, where the pair exchanged their vows under a 150-year-old white oak tree. Emily said she knew it was the spot the moment she spied it.
“As soon as I saw it, even before Tyler and I discussed marriage, I thought, ‘Yup, I'm going to get married under that tree.’ It reminded me of growing up in West Virginia — the beautiful trees and the green grass.”
Two hundred guests gathered for the event, which they were told was an engagement party. That ruse didn’t last long though, with Emily appearing in a custom Modern Trousseau dress and walking down the lantern-lined aisle her daughter and maid of honor Ricki helped make.
“Seeing Tyler standing there was one of the most magical moments of my life,” the blushing bride says. “And having my daughter standing up there with us made the whole thing that much more meaningful.”
Sounds as perfect as we imagined! Now time to get going on those babies you talked about, Em.
