Someone in the Dancing With the Stars world must have a good idea what’s coming with Season 18’s new Switch-Up twist, but they didn’t share the memo with the pros and hosts, who are still trying to play catch-up.
"I'm not sure yet how it's going to play out,” Tom Bergeron told E! News. “I don't know if it's just for a week or whatever they do it they're going to do it for the balance of the season, so I'm kind of as curious as you and the dancers are, as to how this is going to play. It's either going to be very intriguing and exciting or a trainwreck." What if it’s meh? Is that even a possibility or is definitely going to be boom or bust?
Of course, another big twist this season (there have already been several!) was the blindsiding of co-host Brooke Burke-Charvet and announcement of Season 10’s Erin Andrews as her replacement. Tom told E! he recently had drinks with Brooke and he told her several times how impressed he was with how she handled the change. But there’s no tension between Brooke and Erin, he said, adding that they exchanged calls and “there’s a lot of maturity going on here” with everyone being “wonderful” through difficult times.
Erin and Tom are hardly strangers, even beyond DWTS, since they co-hosted the National Spelling Bee a few years ago. “She's very energetic and smart and funny, and I think she's going to bring all of that to the show." However, Tom said he did share some advice for his new co-host. "I just basically said to her, 'Trust your gut, and if you want to — because we're friends — take a shot at me.' I was telling her about when Drew Lachey filled in some seasons ago for a few weeks, he would take these shots at me, and I love that, so I told her not to hold back."
Good advice — it would be nice to see more playful banter between the co-hosts, and it would help Erin to set herself apart from Brooke, who never had that kind of easy repartee with Tom.
Are you ready to see Tom and Erin try out their new co-host chemistry? Do you share Tom’s feeling that the Switch-Up twist will either be exciting or a trainwreck?
DWTS Season 18 premieres Monday, March 17 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
