Pretty Little Liars is taking a turn for the noir for Season 4, Episode 19 (“Shadow Play”), and Spencer is at the forefront of the drama.
According to the synopsis for Season 4, Episode 19, “Spencer’s numerous sleepless nights with the help of prescription pills start to take a toll on her as her hunt for Ali and much needed answers continues.”
It continues, “As she pours over newly acquired information, her world view takes a black and white turn. Now teleported into the world of 1940’s Film Noir, Spencer tries to come up with the answers she and her friends have been desperately looking for.”
Interesting! So now that we know what causes Spencer’s delusions — her prescription pill addiction — we can finally start piecing together the clues. It looks like Spencer’s analysis of Ali’s journal in Season 4, Episode 17 is going to pay off because she gets her hands on even more information. We can also expect a few memorable couples moments in the episode, especially between Spencer and Toby.
“Much of 4x19 is about the relationships, as they’ve been created over the last three or years, but everything is heightened and intensified,” executive producer Joseph Dougherty told Wetpaint Entertainment back in September. “That means the emotions you’re used to will be intensified. There will be an intense attraction between [Spencer and Toby], but at the same time, these are two people who have kept secrets from each other, and that has had an affect on their personal trust level. There’s still things being worked out there, so there’s an intensity in the relationship that you’ll see between Spencer and Toby.”
Hopefully, all the Spoby drama won’t distract Spencer from her mission. As the synopsis continues, “In this world of fedora hats, switchboards and 15 cent coffee, can Spencer finally put all of the pieces together that lay in front of her?” We hope so!
What else can we expect from the Film Noir-inspired episode? We know Ali will make an appearance thanks to this behind-the-scenes photo from Sasha Pieterse. And, “Shadow Play” will also be a good episode for Paily fans.
