With Stefan still missing, Damon is on the hunt for any clues regarding Stefan's whereabouts on The Vampire Diaries Season 5, Episode 2 (“True Lies").
Damon wants to keep Elena in the dark about Stefan's M.I.A. status — what's with the Salvatore men thinking they need to protect Elena from the horrors of the real world all the time? — so he turns to his old partner in law-abiding, Sheriff Forbes. We always rest easier knowing she’s on the case.
Meanwhile, back at Whitmore College, Elena and Caroline are doing some of their own Nancy Drew-ing to solve a murder on campus. (Just like Jessica Fletcher, they can’t go anywhere without someone dying.) And they have their own Hardy boy. Hottie McHotterson Jesse (Kendrick Sampson) tells Elena something interesting about mysterious Professor Wes Maxfield (Rick Cosnett).
Back in Mystic Falls, Jeremy tries to get Bonnie to come out of the ghost closet, but she still wants to keep her recent death undercover. Damon’s new roommate has some other business to attend to, though. The elder Salvatore wants him and Matt on watch-Katherine duty, because Silas is looking for her. (Good idea. Get the two humans to guard the newly mortal girl from an immortal supernatural being.) We can’t imagine why things go awry with this plan.
As if that weren’t enough drama, Matt’s new friend Nadia (Olga Fonda) is putting her own scheme in place and gets violent doing so. What's Nadia's ultimate agenda? Does it have to do with the Gilbert ring she stole from Matt in Prague? Or is she using him for something else?

Without telling Elena (Nina Dobrev) that Stefan (Paul Wesley) is missing, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) turns to Sheriff Forbes (Marguerite MacIntyre) for help finding his brother. Elena and Caroline (Candice Accola) try to find out who is covering up a campus murder, and a fellow Whitmore student named Jesse (guest star Kendrick Sampson) gives Elena some intriguing information about Professor Wes Maxfield (guest star Rick Cosnett). While Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) struggles to return to his old life, he continues to be the only person who can see and talk to Bonnie (Kat Graham), but he can’t convince her that it’s time to let the others know that she sacrificed her own life for his. After learning that Silas is searching for Katherine, Damon asks Matt (Zach Roerig) and Jeremy to keep her out of sight, but the situation quickly spirals out of control. Finally, Nadia (guest star Olga Fonda) uses violence to make a point about her own agenda.
