For some fans, it's easy to pick between Team Rick or Team Carol when it comes to their respective decisions on The Walking Dead Season 4.
Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) killed Karen and David because they were sick and she wanted to stop the prison sickness. Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) decided she had gone too far and exiled her in some suburban development.
Showrunner Scott Gimple came up with this sickness storyline after a combination of Albert Camus' novel The Plague and a tour underneath the city of Edinburgh, detailing the bubonic plague. He told Entertainment Weekly he agrees with both Rick's and Carol's decisions, and he loves that viewers are so invested.
"If this was debate club and I had to debate either Rick or Carol’s side, I would feel confident — very confident — that I could represent either party very well," he said. "And I love seeing people making great arguments on both sides. I love that. A huge part of this show is people asking, What would I do? which leads to the question: Who am I? Who am I at the end of the day when it all goes down?"
Yes, who are you? Are you a Rick, a Carol, a Carl, a Hershel, a Daryl, a Maggie, a Michonne? A Beth who wishes she was a Michonne, a Milton who wishes he was a Daryl?
Back to Rick vs. Carol. EW brought up the argument that Rick basically did the same thing Carol did when he made a unilateral decision without consulting anyone.
Scott replied, "But check it out! Because Carol was the one saying ‘You have to start making decisions.’ He did what she wanted him to do, which was step up, make a decision. But more so, every episode has had something taken away from Rick that he had achieved at the beginning of the season when we first saw him. One of those things was making those brutal decisions. He didn’t want to do that. They have a council now. He was out of that business. And this illness has just been taking things away from him every episode. And that was one of the big things, that he had to go back to doing that."
Just when he thought he was out, they pull him back in!
EW took a Team Carol approach, and Scott just played devil's advocate for Team Rick. Do you have a "team" in this fight, or can you see both sides equally? Vote below!
