Teen Girl in Florida Charged With Felony Over Same Sex Relationship

Kaitlyn Hunt, an 18-year-old high school senior in Sebastian, Florida, has been charged with two counts of sexual battery on a person aged 12 to 16.

According to Kaitlyn’s mother and father, her girlfriend's parents found out about the relationship and went to the police to press charges. Although Kate’s parents acknowledge the age-of-consent law may have been violated, they believe the charges are outrageous since it relates to consenting behavior among peers, and that this is the result of the opposing parents’ rampant homophobia.

Kaitlyn’s mother made the following statement on Facebook: “They are out to destroy my daughter, because they feel like she ‘made’ their daughter gay. They see being gay as wrong and they blame my daughter. They are teenagers in high school experimenting with their sexuality – with mutual consent. And even if their daughter is gay, who cares? She is still their daughter.”

At Sebastian River High School, Kaitlyn was a cheerleader, camp counselor, basketball player, and cheering coach. She was even voted "Student with Most School Spirit” by her peers. That all changed when these events unfolded. She was kicked off the school’s basketball team by the team coach, then the school board voted to expel her. Kate had been studying as a medical assistant, and planned to attend the nursing program at Valencia College after graduation.

Kate can now either accept the Assistant State Attorney’s plea deal, which would require her to admit to a felony, or spend two years under house arrest, and possibly end up on the sex offender registry for life — or she can take her chances by going to trial. Kate’s family has been given until this Friday to decide their option.

Meanwhile, her outraged parents have launched a petition to convince the Attorney to "stop the prosecution of an 18-year-old girl in a same-sex relationship." The petition has over 65,000 signatures at the time of writing.
