Teen Mom's Catelynn Lowell and Tyler Baltierra made the difficult decision of placing their daughter Carly for adoption back in 2009, an emotional experience that was captured on the first season of MTV's 16 and Pregnant. Although they stand firmly behind their choice, life without Carly isn't always easy — especially on Father's Day.
"Today is not easy for me this year, but I knew the sacrifices when I made that decision #birthparentcourage," Tyler tweeted on June 16.
No stranger to criticism (Flavor Flav, anyone?), the teen dad stood up for himself when a hater called him a "sperm donor," claiming you're not really a father unless you're in your child's life.
"It's pure ignorance of an uneducated mind," Tyler said, looping in 16 and Pregnant's Ashley Salazar, who also chose adoption for her daughter Callie. "We both know we are very much involved in our child's life."
Through Bethany Christian Services, Catelynn and Tyler were able to do an open adoption, which means they stay in close contact with the adoptive family and even get to see Carly a few times each year. And though they feel the pain of missing their little girl, they find comfort knowing they gave Carly's adoptive parents a true blessing.
"We gave them the gift of our child," Catelynn told Flavor Flav during the Season 3 premiere of Couples Therapy.
