With all the controversy surrounding mothers fighting for their rights to breastfeed their children wherever and whenever they want, this story about a mom allegedly making the wrong choice to breastfeed while she was intoxicated — and suffering the worst of consequences as a result! — is profoundly disturbing.
The Baltimore Sun reports that Yadina Indira Morales was arrested in an investigation after her 2-month-old daughter’s death. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office believes that Morales breastfed her baby girl while the 22-year-old single mother was “highly intoxicated, allegedly passing out while feeding her baby."
Police were called to the house and the unresponsive baby was rushed to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Although an autopsy will be performed, authorities believe that the infant’s death was related to Morales passing out and suffocating her, and not the toxicity of her breast milk.
Morales has been charged with manslaughter and reckless endangerment of a child. Authorities also revealed that the mom has a history of involvement with child abuse allegations involving a former boyfriend and another one of her daughters.
What do you think? Should this mom be charged with murder, or is the death of her baby punishment enough?
