A healthy diet is important whether or not your baking a bun in your oven, but eating well and consuming plenty of calories is more vital than ever when pregnant. Expectant moms are encouraged to eat extra calories in order to provide nutrients for their kiddos, but this can be extremely difficult for women with eating disorders — otherwise known as "Pregorexia."
Doctors encourage pregnant women to gain between 25 to 35 pounds during pregnancy, which isn't even that much considering that about 12 of those pounds consist of the baby, placenta and water weight. However, even a 15-pound weight gain is a huge struggle for some women, and a whopping 30 percent of American pregnant women don't gain enough weight during gestation.
Mothers who suffer from Pregorexia often don't eat enough or binge-eat, and work out intensively despite being pregnant –– which could have something to do with the media's celebration of moms who drop their baby weight quickly.
"Between 2003 and 2005, the number of baby-related, baby weight-related covers on tabloids doubled and since then, it's almost become an expectation now that if a celebrity is pregnant, there will be a mention of her body during pregnancy and then there's the countdown to how fast she's going to get the weight off," Claire Mysko of National Eating Disorders Association says.
It's terrible that some women feel so much pressure to stay thin that they deny themselves and their babies nutrition during pregnancy, but luckily there are resources (like the National Eating Disorders Association) that help women with Pregorexia.
