Since her release from Rockville Correctional Facility in Rockville, Indiana on November 4, Teen Mom's Amber Portwood has been trying to prove that she is turning her life around and that she can be the best mommy in the world to her 5-year-old daughter, Leah.

“Before prison, I never thought about Leah. I was addicted to drugs and didn’t care about anything else,” Amber reveals to In Touch in her first interview since her days behind bars. “Prison saved my life — and gave me a second chance at being a mother.”

During her 17-month jail stint, Amber accomplished many feats, like getting her GED and teaching anger management courses. Now that she's out, we'd love to see Amber take those skills and apply them to something even greater, like getting a book deal so that she can use her story to help others struggling with addiction.

“It felt like a nightmare. Feeling humiliated and vulnerable (from the strip search), you literally have nothing and walk around like a zombie,” the 23-year-old recalls of her imprisonment. “There were times I reached a breaking point. I knew the only person who could get me out of there was me.”

We hope Amber gets a chance to bond with little Leah and show her that mommy is a role model she can look up to. While she doesn’t have custody of her babe right now (Leah lives with daddy Gary Shirley), Amber did say she plans to fight for joint custody — and with the new Amber we’ve seen, we fully support that decision.
