We all know that grandmas are the sweetest, nicest, most generous people in the world, but offering to carry your very own own grandchild to term? That’s the ultimate sacrifice.
According to the Salt Lake Tribune, 58-year-old Utah mom Julia Navarro was seeking ways to help her daughter, Lorena McKinnon, and her husband Micah. The couple had tried in vitro fertilization and suffered through a dozen heartbreaking miscarriages over the last three years before finally turning to surrogacy.
Adding to their frustration, the couple’s potential surrogate, a family friend, dropped out at the last minute, leaving the couple high and dry. Lorena was ready to give up hope entirely of ever starting a family when Julia stepped up, volunteering to become the new surrogate and carry their pregnancy to term.
Julia underwent over three months of hormone treatments to get her body ready for pregnancy. When the embryo was implanted, it took on the first attempt, which was a good sign. The couple moved into Julia’s home to help with the pregnancy, but Julia and the couple’s baby girl are doing very well. She’s just a few weeks away from delivery.
Hormone injections and pregnancy have enough of an impact on a younger person, we can’t imagine how hard it could be for someone who’s almost 60 to go through all that, which makes this mom’s sacrifice even more poignant. How could she be so giving? As Julia explained to the Tribune, “As a family, we need to help each other.” She even plans to give some of the proceeds from the baby’s shower to needy children in Peru. What an inspiring lady!
