The phrase “only in New York” has been popular with Manhattanites ever since the the U.S. bought that hollowed island from the Dutch, but some days in the city are just stranger than others. That happened yesterday afternoon when a woman gave birth on a crowded Upper East Side sidewalk, to the surprise of several bystanders and at least one good Samaritan.
First reported by My Fox NY, the unnamed woman was in labor with her third child and on her way to the hospital when the incident occurred. The doorman of the woman’s apartment building’s was attempting to help the damsel in distress hail a cab on the corner of 68th Street and East 3rd around 3:30 p.m. when she bent over in the crosswalk. According to one shocked witness, “She was like, 'Oh, my God, the baby's coming.' And then I could see the baby's head coming out."
Luckily, several bystanders jumped in to assist the woman with her labor until the police and medics made their speedy arrival. Several ladies reportedly offered up their scarves to swaddle the infant and help keep it warm (proving that it’s never too early to learn to accessorize).
Although the woman’s identity remains unknown, witnesses say that she was smiling as she was loaded into the ambulance with her new baby girl and taken to Lenox Hill Hospital. Mother and baby are reported to be doing well. One witness who assisted the woman even called the event “a miracle on 3rd Avenue.”
