A couple in Hebron, Ohio, were horrified to find out that a man had hacked into their 10-month-old daughter’s baby monitor, and was actually screaming at the infant to “wake up.”
Baby Emma’s mother, Heather Schreck, told Fox 19 that she was asleep in her room when she suddenly awoke to the sound of a man’s voice, which seemed to be coming from her daughter’s room. Heather picked up her cellphone to check the camera in Emma’s room, and saw that the camera was moving but Emma wasn’t moving it.
Heather told Fox 19, "About the time I saw it moving, I also heard a voice again start screaming at my daughter. He was screaming, 'Wake up baby. Wake up baby'.”
Emma’s father, Adam, then rushed into the room, only to have the camera turn and point directly at him. He says the disembodied voice then started screaming obscenities at him.
Emma’s dad unplugged the monitor and soon realized that it must have been hacked from outside the home. While the Schrecks say they will be taking extra security measures to protect their daughter, experts warn that wireless IP baby monitors with cameras like the Schrecks are very susceptible to hackers.
They recommend updating software frequently, and making sure there are differing passwords for cameras and WI-FI networks.
