When it became popular a few years back, most people thought that eating one’s placenta was disgusting. But now, stars including January Jones, Alicia Silverstone, and Teen Mom 2’s Kailyn Lowry have admitted to doing it. It’s so popular, you guys, doctors are even saying it’s a trend!

You’ll be surprised to know that eating your placenta is not exactly a new idea. According to MSN, it has actually been a Chinese practice for hundreds of years. But thanks to advanced technology, there are now more ways to ingest the delicious organ.

Not only can it be dried, grounded up, or converted into pills, it can also be distilled into alcohol, used as drops, or even put into a smoothie. #Yum

So what exactly is the placenta? It’s an organ that develops along the wall of the uterus during the nine months of pregnancy. There, it feeds oxygen and nutrients to the fetus via the umbilical cord, all while removing waste. Once the baby is born, the placenta can then be ingested by the mother.

Some believe that eating the placenta offers a bevy of benefits and nutrients aiding in a mother’s recovery post-birth. Not only does it help increase the amount of milk a mother produces, but it also decreases the chance of postpartum depression, and more.

Yet, some doctors aren’t convinced of these so-called benefits. Daniel Roshan, an OB-GYN at NYU Langone Medical Center's Rosh Maternal-Fetal Medicine, advises patients that despite the apparent benefits, there have been no clinical evidence or scientific research to prove it.

It turns out that most medical professionals agree with Daniel, and believe that more studies should be done in order to prove that eating the placenta is beneficiary.
