Congratulations are in order for college graduates this time of year. But instead of sending their good wishes, some people are lashing out against a mom who posted a photo of herself breastfeeding during her recent college graduation ceremony.
According to Buzzfeed, many had an issue with the breastfeeding photo of 25-year-old mom, Karlesha Thurman — who recently graduated from California State University Long Beach — posted to the Facebook page, Black Women Do Breastfeed.
The photo was then shared on Twitter with the caption, “Congratulations, mama!!!! Giving her daughter more gifts than one! Isn’t this beautiful? #normalizebreastfeeding." It quickly went viral, and many didn’t have the same reaction.
In fact, several users posted negative comments, including “Nobody told her to hoe around in 3rd period She should've been doing her work & maybe she wouldn't be breastfeeding during her graduation.” Yikes!
Thurman told Buzzfeed she was “shocked” by the negative outpouring, especially the comments calling her a slut. The mom’s supporters decided to strike back with comments of their own saying, “You are awesome! I have nursed 4 babies. It isn’t easy. Let the haters hate. You rock.”
The photo even got Hollywood’s attention from stars including Teen Mom starlet, Kailyn Lowry to football star Chad (Ochocinco) Johnson. He commented on the photo saying, “Breast feeding & graduation? (nice combo).”
Thurman thanked her supporters on her Facebook page, and explained that she posted the photo because her daughter helped motivate her to graduate college. “I found out I was pregnant my last year of college, had my daughter one week into my last semester,” she wrote.
She added, “She was my motivation to keep going, so me receiving my BA was OUR moment, so glad I captured the moment and so glad you shared it with the world so thank you again.”
What do you think? Was it OK for her to share a breastfeeding photo, or is it another example of TMI?
