Teen Mom 2's Jenelle Evans has been arrested a total of eight times since 2010, and according to her lawyer Dustin Sullivan, she's only received one misdemeanor conviction to date. While that certainly speaks highly for Dustin's competence in the courtroom, it also sparks some debate about whether or not she's gotten off too easy.
Just like fellow troubled starlet Lindsay Lohan, the 21-year-old MTV star hasn't spent more than a few hours behind bars, despite the fact that she's faced a slew of charges ranging from drug possession to breaking and entering.
"We have had 23 of 24 charges dismissed or findings of not guilty," Dustin confirmed to Wetpaint Entertainment. "She has had several trials over the course of the past three years and she was found not guilty. She only has one minor misdemeanor conviction."
The offense Dustin's referring to occurred in 2011 when Jenelle and her former friend Brittany Truett got in a physical altercation that was captured on film. Jenelle was found guilty of Simple Affray (public fighting) and was ordered to pay court costs along with a $100 fine. Additionally, she was placed on 12 months probation.
The fact that Jenelle hasn't been locked up for an extended period of time like her Teen Mom co-star Amber Portwood, who is currently serving a 5-year sentence in Indiana, raises some eyebrows among worried fans. Has the state of North Carolina been too lenient? As expected, Dustin assures us the justice system has done its job.
"I would simply remind your readers that our system of justice requires that everyone accused of a crime is innocent until proven guilty. That has been the case with Jenelle as well. I would argue that the State of N.C. had not at all been too lenient with her regarding her charges," he said.
Of course, Jenelle's tide may turn when she appears in court on May 14 to face felony heroin possession charges stemming from her latest arrest on April 23. However, Dustin is confident the "truth will come out," whatever that means.
