Teen Suspended For Violating Dress Code After Shaving Her Head to Support Friend With Cancer

You know what they say: One good turn deserves … suspension? That’s what a Grand Junction, Colorado, student discovered recently, and she and a lot of other people were not very happy about it.

According to the Grand Junction Sentinel, Kamryn Renfro shaved her head to show support for her friend, Delaney Clements, who had recently gone bald as a result of her chemotherapy treatment for cancer. Kamryn says she was informed by school officials at her state-affiliated public charter school, Caprock Academy, that her shorn head violated the school’s dress code of conduct, and that she was not allowed to return to class.

Caprock school president Catherine Breman confirmed that shaved heads are not permitted in the school’s dress code. In an official statement, she said the code of conduct was “created to promote safety, uniformity, and a non-distracting environment for the school’s students.”

The story soon went viral on social media, outraging so many people that the charter school was forced to have a special closed-session board meeting on the matter, in which they agreed to make an exception for Kamryn and allowed her back to class.

Kamryn’s mom, Jamie Olson Renfro, reached out on Facebook to thank her daughter’s supporters, stating, “I would just like to say, from the bottom of our hearts...thank you!...We are pleased with the decision that our school made to let Kamryn back in school today. She got up, got ready, and held her head high as she walked into her classroom this morning. To say her dad and I are proud, is a total understatement.”

We couldn’t agree more!
