Derek Hale is looking for answers, but will he like what he finds? Our guess: probably not. The last time we saw Derek on Teen Wolf Season 3, Episode 15, he was having a telepathic exchange with his long-gone wolf mom, and it didn’t look like she had good news to share. In fact, we’re thinking she probably shed light on uncle Peter’s big, bad plan.
Wetpaint Entertainment exclusively chatted with Tyler Hoechlin about Derek’s fingernail-laced conversation, and while we may have to wait a bit for some answers, the tension between Derek and Peter is only going to grow.
“Definitely from that look Derek gave Peter, it probably wasn’t very good news, which, at the same time, isn’t very surprising,” he told us. “I don’t think Derek and Peter’s relationship is ever going to be a very strong, trusting bond, but his reason for doing this is because he’s looking for guidance.”
Derek’s storyline this season is all about finding purpose. When Derek sacrificed his Alpha abilities to save Cora, everything changed. Now, he’s trying to find a way to put the pieces back together.
“After these last couple seasons, Derek really felt like he was the one who was meant to be an Alpha,” Tyler said. “He thought that was his role, and he wanted to have a pack, that feeling of family again. I think he’s finally realized that that’s not his calling, that’s not who he is supposed to be. That is Scott’s destiny; Scott is that natural leader. But, I think Derek is kind of realizing that he can still have that idea of family with Scott and his group. He can still have those people in his life without having to be the Alpha. He can serve a different purpose. He’s just confused on what the purpose is.”
It’s something Tyler can relate to personally. “He went to his mom to ask, ‘What do I do? Who am I supposed to be?’ I think a lot of people can relate to that. I know I can, from my days of baseball. When that came to a close, it’s a weird thing that I think every athlete, who plays for a very long time, can understand. It’s a weird transition phase. It’s a little terrifying sometimes, and I think that’s what Derek is going through.”
While we're happy Derek is accepting Scott and Co. as his family, for broody Derek Hale, things are only going to get worse before they get better. Season 3, Episode 16 (“Illuminated”) looks like a doozy for our favorite Beta, as he finds himself in quite the battle — with Peter, perhaps? We can only hope!
