Teresa and Joe Giudice Fraud Case: Lawyers Blame “Fame”

In the midst of Teresa and Joe Giudice's fraud case, each of their lawyers are speaking up and blaming the controversy on one thing: fame.

"She's certainly being targeted because of her celebrity," Teresa's attorney Henry Klingeman said. "The government frequently targets high-profile people to draw attention to their prosecutorial efforts. It's especially happening here."

The couple, facing a 39-count indictment for federal fraud charges, has decided to take on different lawyers (for many reasons). Joe's lawyer, Miles Feinstein, said, "I feel that because of his celebrity status he's being treated differently than others are for the same offense."

Teresa and Joe could face up to 50 years in prison and appeared in court yesterday when they were released on $500,000 bond each.

With The Real Housewives of New Jersey in the middle of Season 5, the couple's future on the show is yet to be determined, though production for the next season doesn't start until late September or early October.

"I hope she continues," Teresa's lawyer said. "It's a source of passion for her. And a source of support for her kids. As long as she can continue to attract the attention of her fans, I would encourage [her] to continue to do so."
