Tessa Ferrer Leaving Grey’s Anatomy for New CBS Show Extant (VIDEO)

In case you missed it, a Grey's Anatomy surgeon has been reassigned!

As we initially reported yesterday, Tessa Ferrer (Leah Murphy) is leaving the ABC medical drama at the end of Season 10 in May — having been a recurring guest star last season and a series regular this year — and she's headed to a new sci-fi show on CBS, Extant, starring Halle Berry!

Halle will portray a female astronaut who struggles to reconnect with her family after returning from a long-term space mission. "Her experiences lead to events that ultimately will change the course of human history," CBS teases. The series premieres on July 9 at 9 p.m. ET.

Meanwhile, Leah will play a type-A astronaut — the daughter of the space agency's director.

We were all surprised when news broke on March 25 that two more actors would be leaving Grey's — the other cast-off being Gaius Charles (Shane Ross).

Unlike Sandra Oh (Cristina Yang), who is leaving voluntarily, it seems like Gaius and Tessa were let go.

At least now we know that Tessa — a cousin of George Clooney, another actor who has played a spaceman recently — is landing on her feet. And we feel optimistic that Gaius will, too, especially with his Friday Night Lights cred. Hey, Extant could use a hunky male astronaut, right?
