Can The Voice Winner Tessanne Chin Make It Big In Mainstream Music?

While The Voice’s fanbase is ever-growing, threatening to overtake the once-ratings-juggernaut American Idol, there’s no denying Idol has turned out many more stars. Sure, Idol has been on much longer but The Voice’s winners have yet to make a mark on the music industry. So it’s a fair question to ask — will Season 5 winner Tessanne Chin suffer the same fate? Will she be the first to leave a real impression on the mainstream music “biz,” or will she fade into eventual obscurity?

Without a crystal ball, it’s a tough one to call. Look at Idol’s last winner, Candice Glover. Anyone heard what she’s been up to lately? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? No one who watched the show can deny that the powerhouse vocalist is wildly talented but, at the same time, it was hard to see her marketability even during her run. Despite her amazing performances, it was difficult to grasp what type of album she would put out once the season ended. And, frankly, we have a bit of the same issue with Tessanne.

We know, we know, this girl can sing her Jamaican tooshie off! But is that enough? She’s been known for her reggae fusion style and bringing that vibe to most of her performances, but will that sell albums when all is said and done? It’s hard to imagine that having widespread appeal. Christina Aguilera asked her to incorporate her accent even more during her performances but will the consumers of her music feel the same?

Even “Tumbling Down” — Tessanne’s coronation song and debut single penned by One Republic frontman Ryan Tedder — doesn’t really give us an idea of what kind of music she might produce, since it didn’t really feel like a song that is her style. Then again, 48% of you said you liked it and had already downloaded it in our poll. Not only that, but two of her performances while on the show reached the #1 spot on iTunes.

Despite her success on the show, we’re not sure we think Tessanne will make it “big” in the music industry but will likely enjoy moderate success. What do you think? Sound off in the comments!
