Tessanne Chin Reveals the Celeb Who Pushed Her to Audition For The Voice
Tessanne Chin’s talent has been known to folks in her native Jamaica for some time, but it was only this year that she rocketed to international renown, due to her performances and eventual win on The Voice. And apparently the person we have to thank for bringing her epic vocals to light here in the States? None other than...Shaggy?
Apparently, the reggae fusion artist — who became a huge success in the U.S. with his early 2000s singles “Boombastic” and “Angel” — was instrumental in helping Tess find her way into the NBC singing competition. "Shaggy was actually the person that encouraged me to do this," the former backup singer tells MTV News.
With “nothing to lose,” Tessanne followed Shaggy’s advice, figuring it would be a good way to “reintroduce” herself as a solo artist and break out of reggae. She accomplished all that and a whole lot more, winning the competition and a recording deal with the songwriting talents of OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder at her disposal.
While Tess may be looking to “evolve” from her dancehall roots, how cool would it be if Shaggy was a guest artist on her upcoming album? We can’t think of a better way to say “thank you” to the man who pushed her into the competition.
