On Monday night, The Bachelor: Australia saw its first season premiere come up anything but roses. Although there were high hopes for the import show to perform, the reality is that it didn't translate.
The much-hyped season, helmed by gorgeous chiropractor / model Tim Robards even got a little boost in interest beforehand — thanks to a naked pic surfacing that would've been a scandal in The States.
Tim's old Dolce & Gabbana shots, featuring his naked bum and pulled-down underwear pouch, surfaced in mid-August, while the show premiered on September. But rather than explain them away, the Australian Bachelor folks just posted ‘em on their homepage.
Perhaps they were hoping that the, um, exposure would be good for ratings. But despite Tim's gorgeousness and the fact that he seems to be the whole package (we will continue to use that for eternity, BTW), the show reigned in few viewers.
The show, which premiered opposite big audience-winner and fellow import show The X Factor Australia, only grabbed 669,000 viewers. But on the bright side, the Network Ten PR machine was quick to point out that #TheBachelorAU was the top trending topic in Oz last night. (Although a quick investigation into those tweets shows they aren’t all positive…)
A Ten spokesperson also suggested that "the first-night numbers for The Bachelor were in line with our expectations. Typically, overseas versions of this show have built over time.” The episode ranked second in its timeslot among female viewers aged 25 to 54, and a second episode aired on Tuesday night.
The Bachelor Australia began filming in June, with casting closed June 7, and just wrapped. Who will chiropractor Tim end up with? Not us, but we’ll adjust.
