We get that there’s a rose dedicated to it, but sometimes you can’t hang your hat on a first impression. Take The Bachelor Season 18’s Clare Crawley.

During Juan Pablo Galavis’s packaged contestant intros, Clare tugged at viewers’ heartstrings with the story of her late father, who died of brain cancer. Before he passed, she says, he recorded a DVD for her future husband — who may or may not end up being JPG.

Clare’s intro had the emotional sweetheart edit written all over it, and we would’ve been happy to take that image to the bank. You know, until she popped out of the limo wearing a fake baby bump.

We’re pretty sure everyone in America went from “aww” to “is she crazy?!” in the time it took her to waddle out of the limo. Unless you immediately thought her fake pregnancy was cute and funny, in which case, you’re right in line with Juan Pablo.

But not everyone is sold, and Chris Harrison himself is asking for your take on this, so the topic is clearly highly contentious. "I’d love to hear your thoughts on Clare and the pregnancy stunt,” he wrote in hisEntertainment Weekly blog. “It was a bold move that could’ve gone poorly, but Juan Pablo didn’t mind at all and found it kind of cute.”

While it’s pretty early to be judging people, that’s what you have to do when 27 women are in front of you and your job is to pare them down. JPG gave Clare a rose — the first one, in fact — and on Episode 2she’ll get the first one-on-one date.

What does that mean? Well, basically that she has plenty of time to pull a Lindsay Yenter and prove she’s more than her gimmicky intro. The full season promo showed a lot of Clare/JPG time, but it also hinted to her maybe fighting with nurse Nikki Ferrell, who also started the season on a sweetheart note. Whose side will we be on, by the time that airs? Only time will tell, but we may have more ups and downs ahead with Miss Clare.

How do you feel about Clare, after the premiere? Is she high on your list of favorites? On notice for her prego move? Tell us your thoughts below!
