UPDATE 1/28: While original ratings had The Bachelor: Sean & Catherine's Wedding special clocked at a 1.6/4 rating in the 18-49 demo, with 6.1 million viewers, the final ratings were a little different. The overall audience was increased to 6.15 million (it's all about that extra half a mill who now know all about their sex life...), while the ratings dropped to a 1.5, maintaining its 4 share in the 18-49 demo.
ORIGINAL STORY 1/27: We laughed, we cried, we contemplated the blatant sexing up of the fairly religious wedding ceremony between Sean Lowe and his Bachelor bride, Catherine Giudici. But how many of y’all did so right along with us? A surprisingly large number, actually.
According to TV by the Numbers, The Bachelor: Sean and Catherine’s Wedding pulled in 6.1 million viewers who tuned in live, with 1.6/4 rating/rating share in the coveted 18-49 demographic that advertisers love so much. That’s up pretty superbly from the previous weeks’ Sunday specials, considering The Bachelor: Love Stories — which featured Trista and Ryan Sutter’s vow renewals — only got a 0.9/2 score with 3.91 million watching.
While we can’t imagine a reason not to tune in to the first-ever ABC live Bachelor wedding, we suppose the Grammy Awards would be a pretty good excuse. The biggest night in music nabbed the enormous majority of Sunday night television watchers, with a 9.9/25 ratings score and 28.5 million viewers tuning in. YOWZA!
An ABC press release (via The Futon Critic) noted that the strong showing for their big day was up by 53 percent in total audience and up 60 percent in adults 18-49 compared to The Bachelorette: Ashley and J.P.'s Wedding in December 2012, which drew 4 million fans and scored a 1.0/3 rating.
However, if we’re comparing it to Trista and Ryan Sutter’s 2003 epic affair, it’s really no contest. The original Bachelorette’s wedding nabbed 17.1 million viewers, with a 7.2/18 ratings score for the nuptials. For those of you doing the math at home, this year’s big day drew 64 percent fewer viewers!
