After losing her baby at the 20-week mark, Shayne Lamas is finally breaking her silence. While many thought she had a miscarriage, the former Bachelor contestant is stepping forward to reveal what really happened — and it’s even more heartbreaking than we could have imagined.

“My son had to be removed to save my life,” Shayne told In Touch. “The doctors hadn’t seen anything like it.”

Turns out, her son was growing outside of the uterus, attached to her bladder. When the fetus unexpectedly punctured her placenta, the doctors had no choice but to perform an emergency hysterectomy to remove the baby, Shayne’s uterus, and half of her bladder.

Wow, that must have been a lot to process in the moment — how did she handle it?

“I screamed from the top of my lungs,” Shayne continued. “You never think something like this will happen to you. I felt like someone hit me again and again and again.”

We know this was a nightmarish turn of events for Shayne, but how did husband Nik Richie deal with it?

“The doctors told me, ‘The baby is killing her. We have to remove the fetus or Shayne is going to die,’” he recounted. “It wasn’t a miscarriage. It was them having to kill our child to save my wife.” That’s heavy…

Nik recounts the moment when Shayne died on the table, forcing the doctors to bring her back, calling it an “absolute miracle.”

Now that Shayne is recovering at the couple’s home in Orange County, Shayne and Nik are trying to move on from the traumatic experience. There is one bit of good news to come out of this story, though. Doctors were able to save Shayne’s ovaries despite the hysterectomy, giving the couple the chance to have kids in the future via a surrogate.

“I’ll be able to give my eggs to a surrogate,” Shayne said. “I absolutely will have more kids.”

We’re wishing you the best, Shayne!
