Note: This is the latest feature in our Best of The Bachelor series looking back at some of the show’s most memorable moments, in advance of the January 2 premiere of Season 16.
On The Bachelor Season 10 premiere, it didn't look good for Tessa Horst. Yes, she was an adorable social worker, but when she got out of the limo, she dropped this bomb on U.S. Navy Lieutenant Andy Baldwin...
Tessa: "So I have a little joke for you. Two muffins are sittin' in the oven. One muffin turns to the other muffin and says ‘Damn, it's gettin' hot in here.’ The other muffin turns back and says ‘Holy cow, a talking muffin!’"
Andy: "Are we those two muffins?"
That entire exchange = fail. Even Chris Harrison said on the After the Final Rose special that he couldn't believe Andy picked the girl with the muffin joke.
And yet, they made it work. But not before more obstacles. Tessa wanted to quit a few times during the show. She was sick of the other girls in the house, and Andy had to fight for her to stay. So, ladies, sometimes playing hard to get works.
On the finale, when Andy proposed, it marked the first time in four seasons and only the second in its last seven seasons that The Bachelor ended with an actual proposal instead of a promise ring or some "let's take a chance" blather.
Andy got down on one knee and said "I've always imagined this day, and this is beyond my wildest dreams. Tessa, will you marry me?" "Yes!" Tessa exclaimed, putting her hand to her mouth and whispering, "Oh my God..." He put the ring on her finger. "You've got my heart," he said. "You've got mine," she said. They said they loved each other and he spun her around as the sun set. It was perfect.
On the After the Final Rose special they were still adorably lovey-dovey. And then — dagnabbit! — just three months after the finale, in August 2007, they broke off their engagement. They said they were still committed to each other, but one month after that, they officially broke up. It was sad. And annoying. And for some reason, Andy went from Tessa to Marla Maples. Which was just weird.
But we still love Andy, and if he ever wants another chance at being the Bachelor … he should go on Bachelor Pad. It could use a touch of his class.
