The Bachelor franchise gets a lot of flack for its poor track record; very few relationships spawned on the show make it to the altar. Ben Flajnik and Courtney Robertson, who got engaged during The Bachelor Season 16 finale, are yet another couple in true love’s rear view window after splitting in October 2012. But just because something ends doesn’t mean it wasn’t ever real to begin with.

Speaking exclusively with Wetpaint Entertainment at the 2nd Annual Chris4Life Celebrity Auction Event in Los Angeles on April 5, 2013, Courtney revealed the impetus for the split — and how keeping their relationship together was, in the end, more effort than it was worth.

Wetpaint Entertainment: We really felt for you.
Courtney: Thank you. You guys have been so amazing, and really one of the only outlets at one point in time that really had my back. It means a lot to me.

Wetpaint: You tried very hard to keep this thing together. In hindsight, was it more effort than it was worth?
Courtney: Yes, yes.

Wetpaint: What is it in that moment that makes you just rally?
Courtney: You know, I really was in love with him, deeply at one point. There was a small chapter where it was good, and I kind of held on to that. And I also, just the whole thing, I wanted it to work. I wanted to get married and start a family, but at the end of the day, it just wasn’t right.

Wetpaint: It's also you have to live it out publicly, is there that sort of not admitting failure?
Courtney: Yeah, I think so. I think there was probably a little bit of that, but at the end of the day, I was like, I'm unhappy. You've got to do what makes you happy. So it was a huge disappointment.
