There was a time when Mary Delgado was a fan favorite on The Bachelor. She was rejected by Season 4 Bachelor Bob Guiney and went on to win the heart of pro bass fisherman Byron Velvick on The Bachelor Season 6. He proposed to her, in Spanish, in 2004. Then things went south. In the past six years, Mary has faced a number of run-ins with the law — including two DWIs and a domestic battery charge for allegedly punching Byron in the face and causing a cut to his lip. She and Byron officially broke up in 2009.

But at least one positive thing came out of the relationship: fishing. Mary, 42, lives in Tampa and works as a Realtor. She hosts outdoors TV shows, does voice-over narration, and tells Syracuse.com she's working with a girlfriend to put together an English/Spanish-language fishing show. Her father owned his own salt-water fishing boat in Cuba. When she was a baby, her father took the whole family and left Cuba in the middle of the night for America. "Me, I'm a tomboy. I love anything outdoors," she said. "I used to go (fishing) a lot with my father and my brothers."

It was Byron who introduced her to freshwater fishing; she caught her biggest bass so far on Lake Falcon in Texas. "It was 11½ pounds." Mary will be fishing as a co-angler in several regional tournaments, where women compete directly against men. "Fish don't know what your gender is," she said. "You just have to work hard like everyone else. It comes down to doing your homework and knowing (or learning) the area. Using the Internet really helps."

She's asked if the man of her dreams has to be an angler. "No, he does not," she says. "He doesn't have to be a fisherman at all. As long as he is passionate about everything he does — and that includes taking the garbage out with a smile. That's what I want."
