Sadly, a Bachelor Nation couple breaking up is more the rule than the exception. But that doesn’t mean we’re not super depressed when it happens! Let’s just say we spent a lot of time eating ice cream in our jammies this year, because there were hella breakup announcements in the land of helicopter rides and hot tub makeouts.
Chris Harrison and Gwen Jones
The first major breakup of the year was also the most devastating. On May 9, Bachelor Nation’s master of rose ceremonies, Chris Harrison, and his wife Gwen Jones announced they were separating after 19 years of marriage. The couple had apparently been split up for a while, remaining good friends and sharing custody of their two kids.
But if people who’ve been together for two decades can’t make it, what chance do the rest of us stand? Chris’s split could only be a portent of crappy news to come.
And that brings us to October, also known as The Month of the Breakup. Three couples called it quits in as many weeks. We dressed up like sad pandas for Halloween — because it’s how we felt on the inside.
Ben Flajnik and Courtney Robertson
Ben Flajnik and Courtney Robertson had a drama-filled start to their love story filming Season 16 of The Bachelor. We really hoped they’d make it to the altar anyway, but it just wasn’t meant to be. On October 5, 2012, the pair announced their split in a joint statement. While their breakup seemed amicable in the beginning, Ben got mighty frosty after Courtney moved on with former Bachelorette contestant Arie Luyendyk, Jr.!
Emily Maynard and Jef Holm
Just when we were beginning to pick up the shattered pieces of our lives from the fallout of Ben and Courtney, Emily Maynard and Jef Holm called off their engagement on October 12. The two had survived numerous cheating scandals in August and September, but we have to admit we were shocked and saddened by their split. They briefly made a stab at getting back together around the holidays — but, sadly, that didn’t work out so well. Sigh...
Blakeley Shea and Tony Pieper
Tony Pieper popping the question to Blakeley Shea on the Bachelor Pad 3 finale was one of the cutest moments in Bachelor Nation history. Unfortunately, their love was as short-lived as it was passionate. On October 21 — a little over a month after the proposal was nationally televised — Wetpaint Entertainment exclusively broke the sad news that Tony and Blakeley had ended their engagement.
Thankfully, the year didn’t end hopelessly. While 2012 brought plenty of heartbreak, it’s also the year of Ashley Hebert and J.P. Rosenbaum’s magical wedding. So hold on for one more day, Bachelors and Bachelorettes. Love is still alive!
