Every season of the Bachelor or Bachelorette has a villain: One person that the other contestants just don’t get along with. Sometimes, the villain really does seem to be bad news. Other times, it’s simply a case of tricky editing to create more drama.
But whatever the case this year, it seems pretty clear that Ben Scott is meant to be seen as the villain of The Bachelorette 2013. During Season 9, Episode 2, it became pretty clear that many of Desiree Hartsock’s men don’t like him.
“Shes obviously into Ben. Could Ben be the new Bentley? & I'm not talking abt Desiree's car @DesHartsock @ashhebert” Ali tweeted on June 3.
As the 2011 Bachelorette, Ashley was instantly smitten with Bentley, a smooth-talking charmer who bursting with love for his little daughter, Cozette. But at the same time Ash was falling head-over-heels, Bentley was complaining about Ashley during his Bachelorette confessionals. The other men saw through his act, and they couldn’t stand him. However, Ashley remained blissfully ignorant of “Bad News Bentley” true feelings until later in the season.
It’s easy to see the similarities. Both Ben and Bentley can’t stop talking about their adorable kids. Both are disliked by many of their fellow contestants. However, Ben has not bad-mouthed Desiree, and his feelings for her appear to be genuine.
Bachelor Nation’s reaction to Ben has been mixed. While Ali is wondering if he might be the new Bentley, Emily Maynard tweeted that she doesn’t understand why none of the guys seem to like him. Canadian Bachelor Brad Smith thinks Ben is a “phony,” while Bachelor Pad 3 winner Nick Peterson doesn’t understand all the anti-Ben feelings going around.
Do you think Ben is being groomed as the new Bentley Williams? And, if so, is this even a fair comparison to make? After all, Bentley was very vocal about his dislike of Ashley. Ben’s attitude towards Desiree has been nothing of the sort! That said, this show loves to have a villain. It seems like Ben might have simply just drawn the short stick on this one.
