It doesn’t take a genius to look around at the men on The Bachelorette and realize they (mostly) all have one thing in common: they are buff! With Twitter handles popping up about Sean Lowe’s abs (not to mention our community-foraged fan fiction), and entire discussions revolving around biceps, it’s obvious that the dudes on the show hit the gym prior to their small screen debuts. But according to Season 4 Bachelorette winner Jesse Csincsak, the guys are getting some help with their fit physiques — and we’re not talking about a personal trainer.
“I know that a lot of guys do steroids before they’ll go on the show,” Jesse recently told Radar Online, dashing our dreams forever. And just in case you’re wondering if producers are telling the boys to bulk up, aware of the high ratings they can get from hot bods, the answer is no.
“They don’t tell you to. They just don’t test for it,” Jesse explains. But while showrunners don’t test contestants specifically for steroids, they do test for recreational drugs like marijuana and cocaine, as well as for STDs. But this isn’t uncommon, according to Dr. Sean Nordt, who consulted Radar about Jesse’s claims.
“Most commonly, for anabolic steroids, there are [only] a handful that people check. And you can’t find it if you don’t look for it,” the doctor explains. Furthermore, a Radar source confirms that contestants are not told whether the show will or will not test for steroids. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t looking for big muscles.
“They’ll even have you take your shirt off in casting,” Jesse says of the focus on fitness. And while we don’t condone the use of steroids by contestants, we definitely enjoy the hot bodies.
As for that other known side effect — “roid rage” — Jesse thinks producers are well aware of it. “Roids make you angry,” he tells Radar. “That makes for good TV. So steroids are probably the producers’ drug of choice for dudes because they can get them angry, boozed up, and ready to fight.”
What do you think: Would you want ABC to prevent steroid use? Do you think your favorite big-muscled fellas are getting a little help? Do you even care? Weigh in with all your thoughts on this controversial topic below.
