In nearly all of the last several seasons of The Bachelor and The Bachelorette, the leads have been cast-offs from previous runs of the show. Although they range from the winner (Emily Maynard) to the first runner-up (Ben Flajnik), down to current Bachelorette Desiree Hartsock, who finished fourth, they all have one thing in common: They were fan favorites on previous seasons.

In a recent blog post, Season 6 Bachelorette Ali Fedotowsky pointed out that Season 9 Bachelorette contestant Brooks Forester seems to be in line to be the next Bachelor, based on his editing thus far. “Every season the producers/editors play up one person's story so we fall in love with them, see them get their heart broken, and they feel invested in them finding love again,” Ali writes.

And considering Ali points out that “the only love connection” that has been shown so far is the one between Des and Brooks, it seems like he would be the obvious choice. However, we’re only a few episodes into the season, so it’s possible that producers are trying to throw viewers off from the usual edit of playing down the central connection, a la Catherine Guidici. For example, in Ben’s Season 16 of The Bachelor, it was pretty obvious that Courtney Robertson would win.

Is Brooks going to win? Is he going to get his heart broken and end up as the next Bachelor? Fans don’t yet know what to think (although you can find out if you want to). So far, the only certainty is that he is purposely being pushed into our consciousness for some reason.

But all Brooks aside, it’s possible that there’s someone else who is waiting in the wings for his chance to shine on screen. That person is Drew Kenney, who seems to have acquired 50,000 Twitter followers seemingly overnight, without really having made an impression so far. Also interesting about him is that ABC showed his background story in the premiere, and then seemed to forget about him — for now.

He has the necessary background: a close family, a bit of hardship, in having a mentally handicapped sister, and a general appearance as being attractive, sweet, and ready for love — all of which put him in the running to be the next Bachelor.

In previews for Episode 4, we see that Desiree and Drew share a kiss, and he is heavily featured in the season’s extended promo, kissing Des and sharing a romantic walk in a snowy town. Only time will tell how much of him is shown, but the slow reveal of his character could mean he is either being given the Catherine edit, or else being prepped to be Bachelor 18. Reality Steve agreed, saying “Drew is definitely a candidate and has the strongest backstory as of now. I think he’s got a good shot.”

So, why the Twitter fan follower increase? Perhaps it is part of a strategy to ramp up his appearance of popularity. The Arizona native is a gorgeous Ford model, but so far doesn’t have a lot of fan force behind him. If he’s going to be the Bachelor, America needs to fall in love with him. And the best way to make that happen, is to make it look like we already have.

What do you think: Do you already have a pick for next year’s rose-doling BMOC? And if so, who are you rooting for?
