It’s official: No one has anything bad to say about Desiree Hartsock. Not even a dashing, sexy singer she turned down several years before starring in Season 9 of The Bachelorette.

Wetpaint Entertainment caught up with musician Brett Young, an old friend of Desiree’s — who is also now pals with Bachelor Nation babes Lindzi Cox and AshLee Frazier. Brett opened up to us about his past feelings for Desiree and the (awesome) reason she refused to date him.

Wetpaint: How long ago did you and Desiree become friends?
Brett: About five years back. She was in her early 20’s.

And you were interested in more than just friendship?
Yeah, I think we both had little crushes on each other. I would have loved for it to turn into something, but her roommate at the time was also into me so Desiree wouldn’t go there. She didn’t want to do that to a friend. After that, I went into a long-term relationship and so did she.

She sounds like a real girl’s girl.
She’s very loyal. I respect her for it a lot.

You and Desiree recently got back in touch. How did that happen?
I hadn’t talked to her in maybe a year and then randomly, a few weeks back, she walks into one of my shows by herself. It was great to see her.

Have you been watching her on The Bachelorette?
I’ve been recording it and I think she’s doing an awesome job. I always thought she was a really cool chick. She’s a lot of fun to watch, she stays very true to herself.

Do you think she’s ready for true love?
Desiree’s an honest person. If she’s saying she’s there for love, then it’s true. And I think she’s definitely ready for it.
