In The Bachelorette Season 9 Finale on Monday, August 5, audiences watched Desiree Hartsock go from teary mess to engaged woman when Chris Siegfried popped the question. And though millions of viewers swooned mightily at the speech, the ring, and the beauty of Chris and Des, others aren’t quite sold on the quick turnaround — including Season 5 Bachelorette Jillian Harris.
In her weekly Parade.com blog, Jilly discussed the lightning-fast turn around that made a seemingly disastrous finale into a kissy lovefest. Although Des was (in her words) “completely heartbroken” over Brooks Forester’s sudden exit the week before, she ended the episode gushing to her new fiancé about how much she loves him.
“I have to admit, I don’t think last night’s proposal was romantic. I thought it was sad :(“ Canadian cutie Jillian writes. “Blame it on the editing with the whole Brooks fiasco or maybe it wasn’t editing — maybe it was real life, but I think everyone and their dog expected Brooks to come back. They saw how her heart was with him, and then in the end, she chose Chris.”
So what, right? Des got the happy ending that she always wanted? Possibly, Jillian says, but unlikely.
“I felt this episode, she was sad, she was healing, and her heart was broken. And maybe, just maybe, her statement was true: That Chris was there all along and he is what she really needed, but I don’t think she was over Brooks and that makes all of this a tricky situation. It’s a rushed situation and all you have is your instinct. At that moment, she could have truly realized that Chris was the one, or she could have just needed the support he was able to give her to get over Brooks. It’s not my place to say which it is, but there was a part of me that was sad for her last night.”
