While the Bachelor landscape changes drastically depending on who’s handing out the roses, we can always count on Chris Harrison as an anchor in the pitching and heaving waters of our hearts. But though Chris has been the wind beneath the wings of 27 seasons of The Bachelor and The Bachelorette couples, he knows not all are created equally.
In a recent interview, Chris real-talks about the couples he's most surprised made it down the aisle, and the shocking breakups. “I’m not surprised that any of them made it,” he says of the couples who got married. “I guess I’m hoping Desiree Hartsock and Chris Siegfried, after seeing them, are headed that direction. None of that surprises me. I think I get surprised by the ones that just don’t work.”
So, which are those? Season 6 Bachelorette cuties Ali Fedotowsky and Roberto Martinez, for one. “Just because I know how — at the time — how in love they were, because I know them both very well. And they were a lovely couple and they really genuinely tried to make it work. And then, you know, life happened and for one reason or another, it just didn’t happen for them.”
But the couple that really blew his mind? Season 3 Bachelor couple Andrew Firestone and Jen Schefft. “You know, I really saw the two of them [as] just fantastic and I just was sure and would have bet anything that they would’ve made it,” he remembers. “But again, you know, once you start dating, once you start living together, once you really go through all this — you know, like real couples, it doesn’t always work.”
Chris says that he’s still a “hopeless romantic,” and so he’s still “probably more surprised by the ones that don’t make it than the ones that, you know, that do.” While it might just be a TV show to us, Chris knows the people who star on our Monday nights, and he says it’s a lot easier to believe they’ll break up, than to believe they’ll make it. But he’s betting on love.
